It has been almost a decade since I created my first website, and the sites I create today are a far cry from that first website which consisted of a couple of tables and some text. My main business is developing custom web applications for clients around the world (www.rbsdot.com). That is why you will notice that some of the links on this site go to my main site for specialized services.
I still remember the thrill when, after doing nothing special, my site began appearing on the new search engine, Google. Then it showed on AOL and Lycos (The biggie back then). As I grew in understanding, so did the web. Search engines became smarter. Web browsers became more intricate with the use of CSS, and more and more websites were built, each vying for public attention.
Today, there are literally tens of millions of websites open for public visitation, yet only a few ever actually succeed. As 10,000 disappear, 10,000 new sites appear... then they disappear too. Yet, for those with the knowlege and experience of making the web work for them, the future is brighter than ever.
I am very busy developing custom web applications, and providing web development consulting services for businesses and universities, but I haven't forgotten if it weren't for others willing to share valuable information with me, I would have made a far greater number of poor choices and costly mistakes.
Although the trend for many has been to feature visual effects, a simple Google search will reveal that the top websites have 3 main points of focus. If a website excels in these three areas it has a greater chance to succeed. It is just a function of time. It isn't how beautiful a site looks. I can get top ranking without ever including a picture on an entire website (Just look at the number of pictureless blogs that show up in number one positions).
1. A strong domain name that reflects the content of the website
2. Content written is such a way as to maximize the value of keywords that a visitor may type in the search box to find information
3. A consistant, ongoing vigil and tweaking of the website, based on knowing exactly where your site is on the search engine food chain.
My goal for this website is to provide you with currently relevant web design tools and information to help keep you on the fast track of DIY (do-it-yourself) success on the Internet.
Sincerely, Ron Stamets
